I was at 800ISO in low light on all of those.

So i'm trying to learn and prepare to do some photography like so: http://www.liquidsculpture.com/

I'm not sure any of my four lenses will be able to handle it. I need a true macro at 1:1 aspect ratio. But I did some tests...

I used the 40D Live View feature which is really cool.
These images are like 25% cropped reductions from full-size.

BTW: That little statue is about 3 inches tall.

BTW BTW: ISO 100 on all. On a tripod. The f22 and f32 shots were 30 second exposures in the low light I was working in.

Looks like F8 is probably your best bet. I imagine you'd have to have a pretty strong light source/flash to capture water drop shots like that. Some of those are pretty slick. I like the one where he put drops in front of a world map and made it look like little earths being formed.

I LOVE that one with the earth globe in it!

Well I have a couple 500w photo lights that i'm hoping will work.
The people that do this kinf of stuff really well use the fast flash technique. I think they use sound triggers to fire a really quick flash (like 1/10,000 of a second). The camera shutter stays open for like 3 to 5 seconds in total darkness.

I've read that it is possible, but very hard, to throw bright light on the subject to allow for a really fast shutter and low fstop with low ISO, then visually time the shutter with a remove switch (which I have).

I really just haven't gotten the time to set it all up yet. I imagine i'll end up doing a significant crop on anything good I take which will detract from creating a nice super sharp full image.

I really need a true macro lens (one that has a 1:1 aspect). My lowest aspec ratio is 1:3.5 on the kit lens that came with the 40D. My 70-200mm f2.8L is a whopping 1:6.8 YUK.

I can see me getting a 100mm to 180mm true macro lens soon. They range from $400 to $1000.

It's about 28F here and I just went outside and tried this bubble thing with some normal bubble solution that had been sitting outside already. The bubbles did nothing but float there.

I may try some room temperature solution at another time just to see.

I'm thinking it really needs to be well below freezing though.

So my first macro coupler came in the mail today.
It allows me to attach my 50mm prime backwards to the front of my 17-50mm lens. With the 17-50mm zoomed all the way out it gives me a 1:1 aspect ratio.

I should be getting my other macro coupler any day. It will allow me to place the 50mm on the front of my 70-200mm zoom giving me a 5:1 ratio.

The focal plane is unbelievable thin, and will be even more so with the 70-200 on there. It's going to take a lot of getting used to.

The shots below are all hand-held outside in natural light.
On a tripod with my studio lights shining I should be able to get some great results.

I think I shot all these at f8.0 (on the lens attached to the camera) @ 100ISO.
