Urban/Industrial

Since you've already said you're working on a map with this theme, I assume your ineligible to participate, correct?

Yeah, I can't participate. Even if i could, it wouldn't be allowed because I started it before the contest.

I almost missed the theme of the map. Was all ready to put in my entry, then noticed it, lmao. Urban/Industrial maps are ugly, why would you make that the them.

Its a good idea. There are very few maps like this at the moment, so it should help to produce some more innovative maps as the mappers will have to start from near-scratch.

could you tell us WHO will judge the maps?
Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!

Ok, Me and Reed will give this a go, provided we have the time what with university deadlines, etc... looming.

I'll PM you with contact info.

- Dagless M.D

edit:

good point pure, how transparent will the judging process be? I'd love to know how each map is judged on each criteria, possibly like out-of-10 rating for each section and a bit of exposition or something.
Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: ViciouZ on October 26, 2007, 02:39:34 PM
Each criteria recieves a mark out of 10.

Aesthetics judge: sk89q
Gameplay judge: bitmate
Technical judge: jitspoe

All marks will be available to view for each map.

Wouldn't it be better to have more than 1 judge per criteria? Theres too much chance of personal opinions being a factor otherwise.

I tried to pick people I know who would be knowledgeable in the field, and can judge without coming involved or letting personal disputes with map makers get in the way.

The aesthetics judging will definitely reflect the judges personal opinions. Have you guys thought about perhaps judging the aesthetics through a public vote? The other 2 can be well represented through individual/groups of judges, but aesthetics would do well through a public vote i think.

Would be great to get the general community involved too :P

Yes. The website was and still is meant to contain that functionality, and the idea has been considered, but I'm waiting for GGC to get the site made before finally deciding judge/vote.

No I do not think so, I have already been mapping it for a day and have gotten a portion done, i still have A LOT of work to do. But over 2 weeks I should come up with something either good for matching or good for the contest.

Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: Termin8oR on October 27, 2007, 04:14:19 PM
Yeah, I am the lazy designer who doesn't draw up a map. I use bsp as my blue-prints and come up with an idea that way.
Then I try and think what would be good for the game play or looks, then I move/change things around/add things and see what I get. I have tried drawing out my maps and mapping them that way, but I do not like what I come up with because when I map it, it doesn't look like what I wanted it to on paper.

Designing should take 3-5 months!! Followed by 6-8 months of development and 2-3 months of beta-testing :P
Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: blaa on October 28, 2007, 03:29:58 AM
detail planning takes 6months up to few years, but you need the citys permission, and the wheels of bureaucracy are rolling too slow, so that takes a few months aswell. Then you need to re design your work, because the construction cost has raised significantly and the current project is a no-go.

Right. 2 Weeks isn't enough for a good map :( And a good map isnt the aim of that contest?
Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: bitmate on October 28, 2007, 06:00:51 AM
Since everyone starts off with nothing but the theme and everyone has 2 weeks time, it's quite fair ;)
In our eyes, it's possible to create something good looking within 2 weeks.  If you made up something really original, you can release some more betas after the contest, which of  course won't be judged.

Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: DrRickDaglessMD on October 28, 2007, 06:12:59 AM
I think its possible inside 2 weeks, you just need good planning, realistic scope, good practice and decent starting inspiration. I sketched ours out on paper yesterday and have a portion layed out in BSP already.

I think we should have more than one judge for each section, though. Not that I don't have faith in those you've picked, but it is literally impossible to be impartial (or infact representative) if there aren't multiple opinions, especially on pretty subjective things like 'aesthetics' and 'gameplay'. Perhaps the commitee?

Bitmate, with all due respect fairness wasn't want some of us newbs were griping about, it was whether or not something of good quality could be made, I actually like the 2 week deadline, it helps even the curve as well as makes this more of a speed-mapping contest.

Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: DrRickDaglessMD on October 28, 2007, 10:59:18 AM
is a concert hall strictly Urban/Industrial? It was my understanding that Urban meant inner-city rough streets, like project housing and derelict buildings, etc... as that can mesh with Industrial dirty buildings, etc...

Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: ViciouZ on October 28, 2007, 11:03:35 AM
I suppose a concert hall would be ok if it was the hall and the outlying buildings... on its own it really isn't urban or industrial... if it were under construction, yeah.

Think it should be O.K.?

Actually, I'm using elevators with crate textures as platforms.  It's meant to represent a sort of forklift on-the-wall.  And the map has pretty small passageways, and only one open base area, so I wouldn't know where to put it. :-\  Thanks for the offer though.

Im thinking about this,

When it comes to submission day, can we post screenshots and some exposition on the map (think like the first post when I release our other maps), so we have an opportunity to explain ourselves on aspects of the map, etc..? Im just thinking that if we can explain the reasoning and highlight technical aspects and little aesthetic touches that may be missed the judges will have an easier time coming to a judgement on each map. Plus, will the entries be open to the public immediately?

cheers,

Dag

IMO all of them should be judged by a panel, its only fair that way. One persons idea of good gameplay could well be entirely different to anothers, equally valid. Also, techical might seem to be more cut-and-dry, but people have different ideas about what makes a technically good map - ie, simply the lowest r_speeds possible vs more advanced mapping techniques (func_walls to stop complex geometry splitting adjacent brushes, etc...) to lower r_speeds and maintain detail, that kind of thing. Take one of 4th's for instance - incredibly good r_speeds but a bit barren (in my opinion) compared to say ub_abbey (beta status aside!) which is more detailed but has some >1200 r_speeds dotted around.

At the least, I think each judge should give an out-of-ten rating for each category respectively, that should at least balance it out (as long as the judges feel confident being able to appraise each category!).

well. based only on what was said on this forum, its impossible to determine that Queenie has cheated.  in order to prove he has cheated, it would take multiple peoples as witnesses to the cheating as well as proof such as screen shots. in a case such as this, the rule of 'innocent until proven guilty' applies, and so Queenie should continue to build his map until something proves or disproves his cheating. though i think the only way to prove innocence is to have lack of proof toward cheating.

True, and its not like warwulf doesn't have a conflict of interest, however I suppose Queenie has already admitted to having done work for it before the mapping contest, which I know I didn't have the luxury of. Depending on how much he did before the start, I dunno whether there is any point in disqualifying him. Unless he wins that is, in which case I shall backtrack 100% and write to my local MP. :p

How much did you actually see warwulf? If it was a lot, and all that has changed is the textures, then maybe thats a bit much.

This is the exact screenshot I posted in *StaRz* private channel the day before the contest began.

That was all I had done before the contest (one day).

Also, I would like the point out that I missed a good two days of mapping during the duration of the contest.  I recently purchased a new computer and I was having trouble with the motherboard.  (It's still not set up :-\)

I am currently back on my old computer.

If you feel that I have cheated on this contest, or had an unfair start, I will resign immediately.

if you can prove you lost those 2 days by a witness or (get this everybody) a written statement from your friends/parents, you will be allowed to continue, as the time lost makes up for your advantage, otherwise, you can start a new map or retire, but your current map will not be judged.

Also, all of my clanmates know I did not come onto irc for the two days that I was getting the computer.

So would a verbal statement be enough?

You know... QueeNiE could have just denied that he worked on the map a day earlier... and would have never have needed to even prove those 2 days. As far as we would have been concerned, there would have been no advantage. Something with trying to prove an unprovable thing by using unprovable means... eh... just feels wrong.

Just find a whole free day and try *every* mapping function in BSP. Try all the entities (note: look them up first). Read up on a few things. By the end of the day, you should know what the map format can do. Spend the rest of the week understanding the more intricate details (like r_speeds). If you're a perfectionist, good. You'll notice small lighting problems, alignment issues, etc.

You won't be ready to make a map before this contest ends... but there will be other contests...

So... what about the submission procedure? I'll have a map ready for submission in a couple of days, which was started after seeing this thread. You can private message me here in the forums.

    * There is no limit on the amount of entries

    * Custom content is allowed but not separately judged
    * The maps MUST be be based upon the contest's theme
    * Remakes are not allowed, nor any other form of plagiarism, even if the creator of the map allows it. All work must be original.
    * Maps must have been started after the contest began

I have nothing to gain or lose here but the rules were made for a reason. If Queenie intends on entering the map that he posted screenies of the day before the contest, then it should not be allowed.

Now, say a contestant has been secretly working on a map for a few months and decides to enter it in the contest, other than looking at file dates, I don't think there would be any other way to prove that the map was started before hand.

Also, the fact that Queenie was down for 2 days without a computer to work on the map should make no difference.

Sorry but that's how I see it.

so we're getting close to submission date - this has been pretty fun so far, if not also a somewhat stressful. I demand extra points for writing a dissertation and making a kickarse map similtaneously.

Any word on prizes yet?

I'm hoping we can put together a test server to load all the submissions onto, then take an evening or two playing through them with the public and mapmakers to get a feel for them. Any suggestions? I'd be happy to co-opt the DarkP server for it if you wanted me to. If any clans fancy giving it a go, scrimming on them or something, I reckon that'd give a nice picture of the gameplay of each map instead of released them into the wild to fend for themselves :D

http://www.warwulf-inc.com/pbmappers/ub_leg.zip (21.5mb)

its still a beta version. last night i was kindda drunk when i made the spawn points and i have a ent error accidently put in givepaint for the spwans key\values when i fixed it this morning to put in giveammo i forgot to take out givepaint

umm there is also another texture error saying you are missing some adoor0_3 or something like that. i have no clue what that is but im sure i can fix it in the .map file with notepad. ive just been busy this week taking care of 2 kids and some other things with my clan fang been practicing a lot of halo3 and cod4 :)

also if you dont have a good video card. i suggest you turn off high res textures because you wont be able to move :)

Title: Re: Presenting the GGC Digital Paint Mapping Contest!
Post by: DrRickDaglessMD on November 12, 2007, 06:12:20 PM
Im really hoping it doesn't just mean r_speeds. I think it encompasses the consideration of the level of techniques used, some of which are more difficult to implement than others and an overarching sense of well-rounded development and implementation. Theres a balance to be struck with r_speeds, visuals and gameplay, which experienced mappers will probably know all too well, and its nice that the maps here have some consideration in different corners of the balance: eg, COI leans on the visuals and layout, at the cost of ~2000 max r_speeds (which isn't bad by any counts, and isn't the highest in the competition), whereas Warwulf has good looking visuals through a s***load of photo textures and low r_speeds, but IMO plainer layout. Each has their own merit, its up to the judges to decide which is the best designed technically.

I'm very disappointed in the organization of this contest. I'm  not trying  to be mean, but from the lack of information to the changing/bending of the rules to the changing of the judging... very poorly ran in my opinion.
I'm sure there's reasons why it turned out like this but hopefully future contests will learn from this.
I'm glad some more maps have been turned out for the game. More choices is good thing.
Voting by everyone and anyone will turn this into a popularity contest, which just doesn't make sense.
Again, I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just disappointed.

I think it would be a good idea for the mappers and Viciouz to get together at the end of the voting and discuss how the contest could be improved in the future. There are areas which are good, areas which can be improved on, and areas which need to be seriously considered for the future.

I personally would like to thank Viciouz for setting the tournament up in the first place, and at least making the effort to bring something fresh to the community. Bravo!

I'm very disappointed in the organization of this contest and yeah im being mean(sarcasum)! why were the rules changed\bent?

pffffffffffffffffffffffft :)

what needs to be improved is basicly not changing rules and having the judges judge maps instead of having a popularity vote :)

Example: i could easily get like 30 peope to come onto gg-c irc network and vote for my map with out anyone even knowing about it :P people that dont even play dp and that wouldnt be against the rules because they are voting for a popularity contest, but i dont cause im not that hell bent on winning...

but honestly id like to see more of these contest. they really help out with level design experience.

That's the main reason why I didn't want a similar vote done for the map selection in the 4v4 tournament.  It's too easy for certain teams/people to persuade votes from people who don't even intend on participating.  I felt that picking a level-headed, impartial, and non-participating party to do the selection.  Limited time was also a factor in not running a vote for maps.

Yeah, the voting thing isn't working out well.  It may have worked OK if you could rank the maps, like !mapvote coi piped ub_leg mixer.  Only getting one vote means the popularity votes outrank the maps that should be in 2nd and 3rd place.

i dont know who the rickdagless dude is

but i know i like his map

& REED!

I have to agree with Jits on this one, BUT I think the ranking system would've been more susceptible to manipulation as people would rank their choice at the top, and the closest rival at the bottom, regardless of their actual opinion of the maps. I feel that aesthetics is the only one that should go out to public vote, gameplay should require a few small teams to play the maps and give their opinions. Perhaps people could volunteer to playtest the maps and then the mapmakers as a group can decide who out of those volunteers will give an honest evaluation. The technical should certainly be judged by a panel of consistent and competent map makers, which there are about 7 of.

I think we all expect a little pushing by the participants, but i don't want people to think that me and Dag have been forcing the issue, or that we are the most popular people in the competition (we're not). I like to think that the majority of our votes are based on the merits of our map, although i know this wont always be the case. I think atmays highlights the former; he doesnt know who we are, but he likes the map. Even people who we have a strong affiliation with don't necessarily vote for our map (Pureblood). Also, in our defence, we never asked CC to put that on their channel, and I have encouraged people to download the maps before they vote for them.

Most importantly I dont want this to take the focus away from the maps themselves, the biggest gain is we've made is 4 new, good quality maps for the community, and we've brought a bit more attention to the mapping arena. Regardless of who wins and why, this should be the primary focus of the tournament.

Would it have worked better to have the mappers themselves vote on which map they like the most for gameplay?

And telling them they couldn't choose their own, of course.  :P

An interesting idea, but there could still be a lot of favoritism involved.  There's not really an objective way to do it, however the fairest way to do it would probably be to have a panel of 6-10 people play all the maps through a couple times and cover every game mode, then vote.  That way you at least ensure the gameplay ratings are coming from people who have played the maps.

So what you're saying is that we should really just hold a small tournament based around the maps themselves next time, and then make the players rank the maps.   ;D

Is there any good way to choose people to play the maps?  It doesn't seem like it would be fair to make the committee make that kind of call.  Maybe have each established clan elect people to play in the tournament?

I have no idea if that would work in practice, though.

Building a tournament around the mapping competition seems like a very good idea to me, it helps develop the clanning community, while exposing the maps to a wider audience.

Of course, the only problem is that not all the maps are ctf.

Fantastic, we're very pleased with the results!

I hope next time even more mappers enter, the coolest part of this contest was seeing everyones different take and ideas on Urban/Industrial themes, so more entries, more ideas!

Will there be a post about the technical judgements specifically? The post mentions some tweaks, so we'd love to know what they are and maybe improve on coi some more.

Wow what a joke.
1st was rightfully given to COI.
2nd should have gone to leg.  It was by far better looking than the other two maps. (Especially Mixer)

Anyways next time run it so it's not such a popularity contest.

I'm not at all happy with leg's place either- it's geometry may have been relatively simple, but it demonstrated (in an excellent way) how to use textures instead of geometry, and use them well. It did not deserve last.

Piped: http://zilla-clan.net/upload/867349

I think a month is about right, i mean we want SOME pressure, right? Reed and I did COI in 2 weeks and we have a final university year to deal with at the same time!

I think the biggest key to getting it done in time and developing the idea is to already have some skill and idea of how to map and use BSP effectively, then sketch out what you want it to look and play like in its entirety. They don't have to be really good drawings or anything, just so you can methodically work through the areas in the diagram when you're mapping. This should help you manage your time a lot better.

This is the only design doc we had for COI, I drew it while I was bored:

hope you find it helpful!

I'll try to get my usual demos together pointing out things that could use tweaking on each of the contest maps, but things have been pretty busy here lately, being it's my last week of work at my current job, trying to get build 20 released, working out all the details on moving to CA, trying to make the most of my time here with friends, Christmas shopping, etc., etc., etc.  I wanted to give a detailed review of the maps with an objective rating scheme, but I just haven't had time, so I just gave some round numbers from my first run-throughs for the rating.

Hooray, DarkP finally won something for once!!! ;)

We once won a match back in 2005 against RWE, 9-6 on spawninabox, our biggest victory to date.

We also tested the nerf guns claim of shooting up to 30 feet. We figured that they must have tested it in galeforce winds or from the top of a tall building because we could only get it to fly about 15, still awesome though :D
