I thought I'd never get this map out.  It spent two years in the making, but it's finally here.

This is a larger deathmatch map that supports Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and King of the Hill.  I've included the mapinfo file as well as the map's source .map file and textures specific to this map (ie, no CTP textures).

The only difference between Beta 5 and this release is the intro message (removed "(beta 5)").

- I completely agree that there are too few DM maps... especially since I'm probably the only one who is running a pure DM server right now :)

Nice.  It's been a while since somebody has made an elaborate DM map.  My suggestions:

- Use a different ceiling texture.  The patio brick doesn't work up there.
- On the section with all the ramps, the side of the ramp needs a different texture.
- I see you used the mist brush trick to make barrel sides with no thickness :)  Unfortunately you can shoot through them...
- For whatever reason, the barrels seem excessively large in this map.  Probably because it isn't as open as most.  This might be a good time to push more realistic proportions.  Real barrels/drums are about half that size (round up to about 32 units tall -- you'd have to crouch behind one for cover).
- Barrel textures are missing.
- The metal bridge is really thick -- tread metal is really thin, typically.  It would look a lot better to have it like 1 unit think with some metal support beams running under it or something.
- Several impossible structures -- like the ceiling above the metal bridge -- there's nothing holding those center details up.  The edges just touch.
- Barrel textures are missing.  I'm kind of curious why you didn't just use the standard barrel textures.
- Equipment seems kind of sparse for the size of the map, but that might be good to promote pgp battles and conservative play.
- Use lowercase filenames for textures.  Linux is case sensitive.

I like the map its sweet but one thing with room with autococker you can't get in through the tunnel and whats with the white square there?
Also why is there nothing in that blackhole but a pipe? I like the map though it'll be good to see another DM that is good out on the servers! :)

Haha. That is the secret room. I'm not telling you how to get there. And that little tunnel is the exit, and exit only. ;)
And download the "missing_textures.zip" that is in the first post. That white box has a texture on it that you do not have.

Just a little note: Your zip structure is different than what you suggest in the post -- the files actually need to be extracted to paintball2\pball\textures.  Ideally you should just have to extract them to paintball2.  Also, it would be good to put nonstandard textures somewhere besides the pball\textures\pball directory.

Edit: Oh, and don't include that stinkin' thumbs.db file.  That drives me nuts. :)  .wal files aren't necessary either.

Edit2: The low-res and high-res textures are completely different.  Low-res are greenish with lots of rust.  High-res are white with not much rust.

I think it's more unrealistic to have that many normal-sized barrels than it is to have the fewer large barrels.

I've never seen an 8 foot tall drum.  I have, however, seen huge stacks of drums (my dad works in the pigment industry, so they'll have them stacked to the ceiling, but usually with some kind of shelving type units).  That said, you could probably stand to knock off a couple rows of barrels there, or possibly aim for somewhere in between (though that makes alignment a lot more difficult, but texture locking is handy).

Oh, and I forgot to mention with that tread stuff -- it's typically bent around  the edges and welded to a more solid stucture, so you'd want to put a tread textured brush on the sides, too.  I couldn't really find a good picture, but this sort of gives you the idea: http://www.partnersengineering.com.au/perforated-metal.html

Alternatively, you could treat them like plates set into a more heavy duty frame.

Nice.  Now you just need to get the things in the ceiling made to look a little more feasible.

What are your r_speeds now, though, with all that added detail?

Also, make sure to make backups of your map, just in case. :)

Haha. I haven't gotten to making the ceiling more believable yet. I just changed the textures. r_speeds in some arias are horrendous, but I haven't gotten around to working on those arias that much. I'm still replacing the barrels. And yes, I have backups.

Like the map Zorch, I like how you put in those cool little things, like the dark hole, the grate you can go behind in the river, the blades, that gun that you have to go through the passage to get to. It's the little things that make a map stand out in my opinion, and you have alot of creative ones in there. Very good job!

I was thinking more along the lines of making the surface area greater where the fan-type-thing connected to the ceiling, but I guess that could work, too.  Just be careful with the r_speeds.

So I started to work on this map again. And I think the smaller barrels are murdering vis. I keep getting the same error:

Yea, I started to do that before I went to work today. Think I got it down to around 7500. So maybe it will work after all.

Did you set the detail flag on those barrels?  Also, try setting the chopcurve up to help with the lighting.

I think I only missed a few. But yes, 90-95% of those barrels are detailed.

It basically the "illegal operation" one, only I have MS Visual Studio installed and it wants to try and fix it.

** Update **

Beta 2 is almost done. I made some headway today, and was able to get it to light. So here are some screenies. I'll release it once I fix the rest of the barrels (almost there).

The big room in the center is the worst with r_speeds. Before I changed a bunch of stuff it was hitting 4,500 at some spots.

With the barrels the right size, the bricks look HUGE.  The barrels aren't phong shaded, so chopcurve wouldn't have done anything anyway.  I just assumed you were getting the MAX_PATCHES error, but when the compiler crashes... well, that's anybody's guess as to why.  The numportals has nothing to do with lighting.  That's just for VIS.  Surface area is what matters for lighting.

I think I mentioned this before, but why don't you just use the stock white barrel and use the new textures as the HR4 version?  Also, some phong shading on those barrels would help a lot in making them look less boxy.  To phong shade things, set the value in the surface properties (but don't check light!).  Everything with the same value will be blended together.  Basically every barrel needs its own value (just the side textures, not the top), but I typically cheat.  I gave the .wal files for all the barrel side textures different values and just make sure no two barrels with the same color touch.  It's not the most efficient for the compiler, but it makes things easier.

I don't know for sure, but if that brick is a ctp1 texture, it's probably scaled down in this next release that is due out when I get back from Ohio this weekend.  If it is a ctp1 texture (which I think it is) than I'd leave the scaling alone.  If anyone has noticed any crucial scaling textures from the ctp1, such as these bricks, be sure to post it and a screen shot in the CTP discussion or release threads.

Ok, after a few months, I have finally finished beta 2. Here it is. I have replaced all the large barrels with smaller ones, re-sized the floor and wall textures, temporarily removed the floating barrels, and added minor changes. Also, in an attempt to avoid any more confusion with the textures, I have 're-organized' them.

I changed the bridge in over the water on the lower level. Didn't like the way it looked. Didn't fit in. So how do you think this looks? I have a feeling this will affectively murder my r_speeds there, however. They are already high due to the water. Anybody have any ideas?

Also, I realized about 5 minutes after I released beta two that I had forgotten 6 barrels. Oops.

Oh. One more thing. I don't like how the brick texture tiles. Jits, believe you mentioned that in the demo too. Any body have suggestions on that one?

c) Avoid large rooms.

Not much else you can do.

I have a feeling I should have chosen a different name for this map.

I realized the other day that I didn't have the source to this map backed up.  So, unless I can somehow retrieve it from my old and busted hard drive, there isn't gonna be a beta 3, or final release.  :-\

Unzip to your /paintball2 folder.  Zip includes all necessary textures, with the exception of the CTP textures.

After I uploaded everything I found an error with the barrels in the middle room where the plant used to be.  I'll fix it next time around.

Just my personal opinion but I would apply a metal texture to the bottom and/or top surface of the lamps.
Well, nothing else to say. The map looks great and will be fun to play. I just hope you make the final version a tiny bit faster than the _b3 :P

Oops, I didn't pack the zip correctly.  I fixed it so you can just download it again.  Also delete the folder "/paintball2/pball/abandon" (or just move it to your textures directory to avoid the download).  >.<

I put it up on the beta server.  One thing that really bugs me is that the barrels aren't phong shaded.  I'm tempted to write a program that will auto-phong shade barrels (or a custom list of textures).

Edit: lol, we played hide and seek on it.  You about need to make it DSM, or we need some kind of BF2-style capture and hold game mode.

I hope you can fix the last things and find a solution for the crazy lighting. This map is very nice. I would like to see more inside maps like this, because lots of outside map looks like others, always the same style, that is boring ;)

I can't figure out why the lighting is doing that.  I'm not sure if I can fix it.

The chains I honestly don't care about.  At least not that part of them.  No one is gonna see that unless they noclip out of the map.  Besides that, those where a pain setting up.  :P

And the water glitch is interesting.  Sometimes its there, and others its not.  It doesn't show up in the qbsp.bat compile, but does in the final.  :-\

Try bringing the water up a little higher so it overlaps the brush, maybe?  I don't think the qbsp stage does anything different for final compile, so I don't know why that would be any different.

I don't understand how this map can look so pretty and still not completely destroy the RAD compiler. Especially with all those phong surfaces! Great job with this, I can't wait until it's released.
