How do you think instances of verbal abuse (or, more accurately, textual abuse) in the game should be handled?
-
People should send screenshots or logs and the people doing the abusing should get maybe a warning? Then a temporary ban. After each offense the ban time would get longer and longer.
-
Why no cookies :(
Anyway, I think they should be defined by the server owners.
-
swear filter...

Not to put your idea down but this is a bad idea. The problem with it is that if everyone who is verbally abused, whether it is for real or just someone playing around, would send a log to jitspoe here on dplogin.com, the site would probably be closed within a few hours (over exaggerated a bit).
I will not lie, I know that today alone I have probably abused at least 10 people if not more. So if everyone reports people that verbally abuse them jitspoe would be spammed with PMs or whatever of people reporting other people, and that could lead to higher bandwidth usage which could lead to bandwidth overage and we could be shut down or jitspoe could have big overage fees to worry about.
If I am way off track about any of this please correct me. It seems like this is how it would work though.
-
Client-side swear filter to block out what people don't want to hear, and an optional server-side warning/kick/tempban system for server admins wanting to make sure their server stays clean.
-
swear filter...
That in combination of the players/admins reporting instances (backed up by logs). This would be another good use for the committee. ;)
-
I wouldn't trust the players to report actual instances. :P
-
I like Eiii's idea better. I dont see why there should be some sort of punishment decided by jitspoe, or a committe, if there should be a punishment, it should be from a server admin.
-

I like that idea...but some server admins just open their server and go to others...so if there was a screenshot for that offence I think the server admin should get a message or something like that....and have the screenshot in the message.
-
Well, they shouldnt, since everything they dont want to see should be filtered out.
-
Or cause a warning/kick/ban.
-
Just use a swear filter. Who cares if people curse.
-
I will not lie, I know that today alone I have probably abused at least 10 people if not more.
And what is the reason you do this for? Don't you feel it reflects poorly on the community to any new players who might be testing the game out? Or to existing players, for that matter.
-

The logs would come from the admins though, so players cannot give out false accusations and get away with it.
-
Why would they bring logs about people swearing?
Its not like your global ban them from that, are you?

I'd like to do some research on how much verbal abuse there is, and what people consider verbal abuse.
-
client side swear fliter.
There should be 2 ways to set it, one way being ***** or like #$%& to be the bad word, and another being any comment made the whole text doesn't show.
ex: you ***** or the person just not seeing anything including "you"
-
Just use a swear filter. Who cares if people curse.
It's more than just cursing.
-
1. What do other online games use/do?
2. People's definition of verbal abuse varies too much.
3. If you really want to do this, then it has to be uniform across ALL servers, or don't bother doing it.
I would say let this one go. THere are other issues that need to be looked at rather than this. Unless there is a sure fire solution in a can implemented in anotehr mod somewhere.
Let me give you an example:
If someone is texting " You h4xing c.0.c.k. sucker " that's one thing, abusive maybe, anoying definately.
If someone is texting " easy meat " " too easy " or just trying to inflate his ego behind his keyboard, that's anotehr example of a form of abuse.
Both cases could be settled by the simple "ignore" feature.
You will never make everyone happy with this.
-
I agree with knack... ignore feature for those who arent fast enough with the comebacks. and then the server admins can temp ban peeps if they feel it is over-accesive(did i spell that right?).
-
over-accesive(did i spell that right?).
You don't need over in there and yes it was spelled wrong it is excessive. Remember the Spell Check button is your friend. :P
-
who needs spell check when your here to police my errors? ;D
-
Well there´s no easy solution to this question. The thin is that if someone verbal abuse other player(s) just shows his/her immaturity. It´s a real shame that a part of community is so ignorant to the others.
I mean why one like to call someone noob. Instead if he´s a weaker player that one should rather try to help him. That´s why I´m sorry that #definedp halted. Nothing happpens. Just another irc channel.
You might wanna try this. When you see that scene noob from above make a say bind - Help him, don´t trash him or whatever you like. Yeah I know that it might sound merry, but so what?
Individual makes difference and progress. Leaders lead the group.
-
It should be handled by a community-driven effort to increase the maturity and respect players show each other in game. The ignore feature is there for people already who dont want to see any abuse. But we, as an organised community able to discuss things like this need to make the effort in public servers and hope that we can sway the general attitude people have in this game.
I will not lie, I know that today alone I have probably abused at least 10 people if not more.
You are part of this organised community, and whether you like it or not, doing that effects more than just the 10 people you directly abused.
-
I think a mouse driven ignore option from the score board would be a good start.
I also favor a review of demos or server side logs by Jitspoe.
It can be a multi-tiered approach.
-
I also favor a review of demos or server side logs by Jitspoe.
Why? I dint understand. Giving Jitspoe yet another task for something as trivial as a guy 'expressing' himself in a server seems illogical to me. Not to mention that you are implying that you would global ban that person, which is laughable to say the least. After all, this is the internet.

This could be a job for "The Committee".

This could be a job for "The Committee".
Drat, you beat me to it.
-
This could be a job for "The Committee".
I know someone would bring that up, I was going to write a disclaimer on the post about it :-\
Committee or not, its still work for Jitspoe (he would have to set it up or be part of it at some point), and if you even manage to make it work, is it worth to gather people on irc or have a meeting to decide if they should ban or do whatever they would do to the person? Just because they guy told another guy some insult? If the other guy is truly offended he would just ignore the guy, otherwise its probably because he wants to get him in trouble.
As I said, its the internet.
ps: Sorry if I didn't make any sense, I'm tired.
-
Why can't people just have a warning then a short global ban? After each repeated offense getting longer and longer?
If someone is called a basterd in the game, that shouldn't be a good reason to report someone, don't sweat the small stuff. Someone who is repeatedly getting harrassed by an individual everytime they are in the same server as them constantly getting insulted would be an ideal case.
-
OK this really has gone on long enough.
We have a cheat detection system in place which is almost automatic. Talks of pier groups to handle "issues", now a group for taking care of verbal abuses?
What other online game has all of this? Verbal abuse can be settled by each server admin/owner. If they don't want to do anythign about it, that's fine. As far as hurting potential new player's feelings, WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF ONLINE GAMING AND THE WORLD WIDE INTERNET. It's like you ( all for this group) are trying to reform the UN here online in the DP community. It's not going to work.
DP has 2 major problems right now: Hacking and egos. The hacking part is just about taken care of and the egos ( I classify egos as those that boast they are the dp.pub.champions and better than life itself and then those that think they are so good that they wouldn't be caught dead playing dp and blast anyone that doesnt think their way) can be controlled by the server admins, irc ops, and forum moderators.
This is getting way over thought.
-
Agreed. You can't review individual circumstances by a committee or whatever. How many times in your 20 minute quick play on pub do you see abuse? Now remember that that was only in 20 minutes, so what about the rest of the day?
Knack is right, server admins control it, we aim to help it, that is all.
-
<3 Knack
Thats what I've been saying :-\
-
I honestly can't see why it's a problem with people. Unless you're xsv-boy/bix, where you get grounded by your daddy because he sees curse words on your screen, because hes 13. Honestly, I can't believe that people are sensitive enough that curse words over the internet can hurt them. Ignore them.
-

That obviously depends on many factors, and yes age is definately one of them. You're showing your immaturity through the post you just made. If my young child was playing this or any online game, I would not want them to witness "curse words". Even if bix was 13, so what? You think we don't have 13 year old kids and younger playing this game?

I think you guys are going about this all wrong.
Let me explain:
When you "wall-hack" or "modify textures" etc., you are obviously doing it to gain an advantage in the server.
So therefore, you are banned from the server.
What should be done about verbal abuse? This:
Mutes.
Think about it. When you verbally abuse someone, you almost always aim to put them or something about them down. Therefore trying to gain an advantage of power over them. So getting muted for a week would probably fix a person's wagon pretty good. And of course, punishment always grows. (Warnings are good too for the first time offenders)
Another option:
A "stealth" swear filter. Once you have said something along the lines of 2-3 inappropriate words in 1-2 minutes, you get temp-muted for 5 minutes. Would work wonders in pubs.
Thanks for listening to my thoughts,
Brock.

Mute sounds like a good solution, but they should be server side, nothing global.
-
I dont have much of a problem with swearing but some people over do it. It has gotten to a point where some people are just plain rude. Some of the insulting I've seem have been on humour and on the joking side but to see a few people just talk about having sex? (yes, that did happen yesterday... I wont name names but it was quite odd/funny reading it) At the same time, there are teens playing this game. I don't think I want my kids to be playing and reading any of those stuff.
The spamming part gets bothersome. I'd like to see something done like... spamming 5 times in a row will get you kicked off a server and temporary banned for an hour or something like that.
edit: oh, i even remembering one time... they were putting down americans and making really ignorant (not really the right word to describe it) comments that was just hard to take.
-

Wait.... Don't 10 year olds play this? That's pretty bad to be talking about that on a game... it must mean you have no life and/or no friends.
-
or a hole in your computer screen :P
-
WHO CARES ABOUT SWEARING. If you're getting offended by people exercising their right to talk about whatever the intercourse they want, you shouldn't be online. I can honestly say if you "muted" me or whatever, I'd still come back talking excrement. It would not change my attitude whatsoever.

intercoursein A right
-
Sad thing is there was a muting system installed for a reason this is such a waste of a topic. If you dont feel like seeing spammers put the whole game on ignore except for yourself and maybe a friend. No need for recon if you know how to play the game.
BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION =/

Good idea. I have seen that done in a game now that you mention it.

Really nice attitude man. From what you said there you just lack any kind of social skill and behaviour. What goes arround comes arround, remember that.
-
What does my post have to do with "social skill and behaviour?" This is a free online game, not a trip to the mall.
-
What does my post have to do with "social skill and behaviour?" This is a free online game, not a trip to the mall.
Because online behavior can be a reflection of your Real Life (tm) behavior.
-
What does my post have to do with "social skill and behaviour?" This is a free online game, not a trip to the mall.
Because being online is just another form of a social environment, the very fact you play this game online versus other real people demands that this is a social exercise. Yes you lack the direct face to face communication, but the communication is still there nontheless. Now you seem to lack the ability to comprehend this, and your ideas reflect this lack of understanding.
What does my post have to do with "social skill and behaviour?" This is a free online game, not a trip to the mall.
Because online behavior can be a reflection of your Real Life (tm) behavior.
And Knack, just want to help you out a little. Online behaviour IS real-life behaviour. The person is in control of his behaviour in real kind of way, just as if they went "to the mall" or spoke to their friends on the phone. Their behaviour has a direct and real influence on their environment in each and every case.
-
What does my post have to do with "social skill and behaviour?" This is a free online game, not a trip to the mall.
That is exactly what fuels verbal abuse people just don't know that is the same thing as going out in public in your example going to the mall and just swearing at everyone and abusing people which you rarely see in real life either that or they don't care.
-
intercourse excrement sock balls black person very *friendly* person booger girl thingy sexually promiscuous person ass penis
just thought i'd throw that in there so you'd know that the conversation in servers would look like if there was a filter
-
newbie(1): you black person ass girl thingy piece of excrement i shot you you intercourse sexually promiscuous person!
newbie(24):orly.

Everyone seems to think swearing is the issue it's not.
Verbal abuse is the issue, constantly making fun of someone and putting them down every game they are both in would be verbal abuse. If someone is talking about black people having sex or whatever example: "I'm black and have a huge detective!"
That would not be verbal abuse. It may offend some people but it's not verbal abuse. Example: "You stupid bundle of twigs! you suck! why don't you go kill yourself" Would be verbal abuse, i've heard lots of stuff like that said and things like it.
-
Well you got the point there, this went off topic for a little. It´s just that all of it is verbal abuse. And any mature person which is part either of this community or the DP game itself should respect other players every time.
-
some people seem to think that because they play online and you can't see or know exactly who they are gives them the right to abuse or degrade people. i think most of these people are the younger players. I would like to think the older players (age wise) are wise enough to respect others whether they are beginners or not.
it's quite sad to see what people say on some servers.
-
id say ignore (triggered by person, client side), and maybe a mute (triggered by admin, server side), but thats just my opinion :P.
edit: sorry, im a bit new here, i didnt know there already was an ignore function x.x(at least i heard of it in another thread x.x)
-
I haven't really thought about verbal abuse until today some random newbie started a racial rant because I'm black. Then he had to add a racial slur. This was sudden verbal abuse too. I typed nothing the entire map and he slowly started to get annoying. Like KoreMagna explained, it's really sad that other people try to degrade other people across internet because they simply can. I even find degrading people because of their play is unacceptable. The more annoying thing is that no other person playing, maybe 10 or more, even gave a reply. Funny how it's all because I use "Da" because "The" was taken.
-

What did you expect to happen, others to join in and have a "nuh uh" "yes huh" argument? I guess now more than ever I see that people take games too serious. Imagine a punk on the basketball court, talking trash. I know you'd laugh if you saw some 5'7" 120 pound kid with tattoo that says "UNIX", calling you some dumb name or making some comment... would you expect to stop playing just to confront him for talking smack to you? What does it accomplish by stopping to play just to pick on a 14 year old? Type ignore and his ID, game over for his rant.
I catch so much for being a Jew, have I ever cared? Not in the slightest. Is it annoying? Nope. Do I wish people wouldn't say stuff about Jews whilst playing a video game? Sure. The fact remains, if you can't laugh off some rant, ignorance or verbal abuse that is sifting across the big series of tubes that is the internet, perhaps you need to re-think what offends you.
If I physically threatened you, would you be scared? Of course not. It's got NOTHING to do with me, nothing. it's the fact that I have no idea who you are personally nor do I know anything about you as a person. Nothing. So no matter what I say to you, and the online alias you use, I'm not getting to you personally. If you take a rant personally, you're probably the problem.
-y00tz.

Fighting online is like racing in the special olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded

I see your point and I agree. It still doesn't change the fact that it's annoying. Also, I know that my post will not change the opinions of others. I guess it was just something I just felt like doing. At first I found it offensive but it did get more humorous after a while. Talking about people's play does not personally offend me. I just don't like it when it gets too serious. But this particular rant had nothing to do with the game itself so I can't take it as trash talk on the blacktop. I agree with everything you typed accept for that I'm probably the problem. There's a difference between poking fun or common stereotypes and flat out degrading people.
-
y00tzy, y00tzy you say some smart things. But you seem to be accepting these things when maybe you should think more about stopping them from happening in the first place. Its true that its a nice trait to have to be able to simply ignore these attacks, but sometimes one has to stand up abd defend their cause, even if it is against some dumb kid.
-
Have anyone wondered if the handful of people who are making these abusive comments are the reason why some people may not be join the dp community? Most people playing ARE nice people...
Perhaps because I am older and realizes that some comments proves no point and only starts a verbal war... or is it because the players making those comments are the younger players (the teens) who wishes to feel they own you, therefore, they feel they have the right to do so?
y00tz, you're right... if you dont want to read those comments, dont read it... i usually just play and dont bother with comments. I'll read them but you wont see me answering to it. I really dont care if you're black, white, red with polka dots... all I care is you play and have relevant comments on the GAME (ie, nice shot, nice nade etc).

Once again, fighting online is like racing in the special olympics; even if you do win, you're still retarded.

is it? ah, found the quote...
