use a tripod wiff doz lenses bro. would look sooooo much better without the blur.

I was on a monopod and sitting.
The light was low, and I was at 100 ISO.
The blur is from the bird's movement. Them Downy Woodpeckers don't sit still.
If I would have ramped the ISO up to 400 I would have been well over 1/500th of a second shutter, but I forgot to adjust ISO. If I shoot that same shot in direct sunlight at F2.8 i'll get around 1/2500th shutter speed. Occasionally i'll stop down to F4.0 or F5.6 when my shutter goes above 1/1000th just to increase the focus zone. I think at F2.8 the focus zone is only around 2 or 3 inches deep at that short distance and full zoom.

BTW, that's NICE lens. how much did that run you? i'd say somewhere around a grand.

Yeah, it was right around $1100 for that lens. It's the non IS version of the 70-200 2.8L.
As fast as that lens is, and being as I will probably never shoot it without a tripod or monopod, I really didn't need to pay the extra $500 for IS. Although the IS versions of the 70-200 f4.0 and 70-200 f2.8 are both weather sealed, which is a plus.

i love taking extended exposure shots.
I need to learn my gear better before I start doing some. Specifically, the focus mechanism of my DSLR vs my point and shoot is a good bit different. So blind focusing dark scenes at 30sec is going to be different for me.

^the easiest way to focus for blind dark, is to get everything set up, then hit the area with a spotlight to focus on what you want, then without letting go of the shutter, turn off the spot, then shoot

that way there's no guessing involved...

*edit - the only thing is when you use manual lights, you'll have to guess at the exposure time :/ it takes some time to get the timing for how long to keep the lights on, and how long to keep it exposed for until I get what I want.

just a bit. most of it was stuck in the bell housing. can't believe i was still able to drive with the clutch that bad. lol. well time for a replacement. should be here tomorrow.

It looks like I have a female hummingbird that has laid claim to my feeders.
This means she'll be building a nest and shopping for a mate.
This will draw a number of males into the area.
I'm going to give her a few weeks to get used to me while I just watch her come and feed.
After a while I'll be able to sit a foot or two from the feeders while she drinks and take some pictures.
My long lens requires a minimum of 1.5 meters for focusing, but my short lens will do great for up close shots.

I'm excited!!!
