Server Discussion / Re: Server requirements
« on: May 14, 2005, 09:40:55 AM »
well, if a small system can handle a few servers, the only real problem will be traffic, right? so, how many GB/month would u need for, lets say, a 12- and a 16-slot server? any idea? (jitspoe said something about 3kb/s, but, would that be 120 GB/month if i calculated right, for the 16 slot server?)

Paintball2 still has compatibility with the Q2 game dll, so the paintball2 dll should work fine with Quake2. If it's a Linux server, I'll have to compile it with an old version of gcc, though, because of byte alignment or some such garbage (this is why I hate developing on Linux). Unfortunately Quake2 has some security holes and potential stability problems, so it would certainly be preferable to use the standalone paintball2 executable, but if you can't, you can't. For now that will be OK, but in the future, things like compressed network protocols, enhanced physics, fast file downloads, etc. will make using the standalone on the server much more preferable.

Yes, master =) i know, and I'm still trying to get a server with the standalone version of Alpha14. As I tried to update to build14 on the server I'm running now, it wouldnt start anymore, so I "downgraded" back to version 13, and yes, its on a linux server. But you shouldnt worry about that, I'm just saying that removing backwards compatibility WILL in the end result in a split of the community, which doesnt necessarily have to be a bad thing, if it removes the cheaters, but will once more cut the population on the servers. And as most players nowadays play on Graffiti Servers again (as the Apex are down),most likely the larger amount will stay with the older versions.

Well, if you want to run a 16- and a 12-slot server on 1 machine, what would be the requirements for it (besides a really good connection) ?

- CPU?
- Ram?
- Traffic??

and, would you happen to know what computer the Graffiti Servers are on? they seem to run 5 servers on 1 machine even :)

I have to agree with Jitspoe on that topic. Imagine how many players are still using CS 1.5 :)

And also, we already have a problem with the backwards compatibility to Quake2:
As my Clan is renting a server on a gameserver provider, we have to use Quake2 and paintball as a mod. If I'm right, this is not possible with version14 (server version 1.81) anymore. That means we cannot upgrade our server, thus wont show up on the new serverlist, which gives trouble to some people. Although most people I know use ASE or HLSW (and with Gamespy Arcade its also possible), some "oldschoolers) might find it harder to access our server, as well as the Graffitiy Servers. If you want to go away from Quake2, this means we will most likely stay on version13 as we are now, although I've been talking to those folks to make it possible for us to have the new client running on their servers, no response yet.

On the other hand I know hacks have become a more severe problem in the past months. Just this week I saw another speedhacker, and left the server, cuz its just no fun to play with these folks, it destroys the whole game. Deleting these hacks off the game will therefore an important step for this game, however it will be done.

Clans, Matches, and Tournaments / Re: Ryder Cup

actually i believe that each team will dominate on their server, so the match would come down to how many maps each can win on its own server :D

I personally dont believe that eR33t people can bash DarkP if the pings are the other way round :)

he might want to say that some settings cant be changed while ingame (are these the settings that are inscribed in the server.cfg or are they protected someway else?)

Hah thats a good idea, but wouldnt it just be er33t Vs DarkP ( ;)) with Bozz and a couple of germans? Its a nice idea though, plus id love to see some of the american players play with a 280 ping.

er33t is... almost dead? lol... there is Fyrestorm... and noone else ever playing. And dont forget that there are still a few good american players who didnt care to join er33t, and now play in cP, krew, whatever...

Clans, Matches, and Tournaments / Ryder Cup
« on: April 13, 2005, 10:28:23 AM »
what do you fellows think about a Ryder Cup thing?
explanation:  The Ryder Cup is a golf competition where the American Allstar-Team plays against the European Allstar-Team. Each team has a captain and a few players, they play 28 rounds of golf.

so, putting this to paintball means a match of America vs Europe. The rules i suggest should be the following:

1. There should be 2 matches total, 1 on an american server, 1 on a european server, to make things fair
2. Each match should consist of 5 maps, making it a best-of-5, where each team can pick 2 maps and a tiemap is selected before starting.
3. It should be a 5on5 or a 6on6, because 12 players is the max the european server provides and there arent many maps that allow for a good match of more than 6 players on a team.
4. Each team has an elected captain who decides about who will play and what maps will be played. (i know this is hard to decide for the U.S./Canadians :P)
5. Each team can substitute as many players as they want to, but keep in mind not to have too many players in a team at the same time.
6. The match should be saturdays, and no later than midnight GMT/7pm ET.
7. dunno, please send some more suggestions

I think this will be the greatest paintball match ever if we ever get this planned and done :)

Haha, wow, that's crazy. The timing on that must have been just right. I'm surprised that happened unless ffire was on. That makes me curious, though. I wonder what happens if somebody disconnects just before eliminating somebody...

well, see here:

as you can see, the "observing" paintgren kills bitmate, because Pimp, who tossed it, just left the server :)

Paintball 2 Discussion / Re: Custom Crosshairs
« on: March 14, 2005, 10:43:20 AM »
I personally think that this is a very well written Tutorial, and worth being published. Well structured, helpful pictures and good explanation. Good Job S8NSSON!
Actually, I'm probably gonna try that, too, sounds like a very good idea, and I've found better crosshairs in many of the Tactical Shooters that I have played before than in paintball.

Only negative thing to be mentioned about the tutorial:  it is limited to photoshop, tho converting it to other programs like paintshop pro or w/e might work, i think the tutorial could be held a little more general or contain another description for another program (like "in Paintshop Pro you would do it this and that way"). That might be a job for someone else, and the result might well be included in the Wiki!

alright, i've sent an email to Jitspoe, but have no response yet, so i thought I'd just share that problem with the community:

On some (but only some!) maps, my server will crash upon loading them.
Quote
Server crashed:
CMod_LoadBrushModel:
maps/ub_cliff.bsp has wrong version number (41 should be 38)

thats the error message, but i dont get it... wrong version number? it works fine on my own machine, but not on the server it wont !!?!!  any idea what that is and  what i could do?

Paintball 2 Discussion / Weird

Weird. I had no other title for what happened to me. I wouldnt even call it a bug, its just plain funny:

Well, try to think about what happened there first, before you read on.

My explanation to this:
[Nc)R had already switched from blue to purple before i killed him, but of course, you only switch sides after dying. So we both fired our shots at each other, i hit him, he died AND SWITCHED, and then his ball that was still in the air killed me.
I guess thats a rare occasion in this game :P

Map Graveyard / Re: New Jumpmaps
« on: January 18, 2005, 04:12:16 PM »
Is your map really large and open? If so, that causes a lot of problems with the q2 engine. Sounds like you might have too much surface area for lighting. One way to resolve this is to scale the textures up (in the editor, not the images themselves). This will, in turn, scale up the lightmaps, so smaller lightmaps will cover more area.

actually, that map is completely indoor.  and what do you mean with "scale the textures up"?  i made a small room, and after finishing it enlarged it to 10 times the size.... is that what you were talking about? Cuz if, then it causes another problem to me:  now i get an error like "MAX_PATCHES", does that mean to many brush-parts? and how do I resolve that?  thx for helping :)

Map Graveyard / Re: New Jumpmaps
« on: January 17, 2005, 03:58:01 PM »
firstly.... hardjump? HARDjump?  H A R D jump???  come on, im probably the worst jumper of all non-newbies around, and even i made it in 17:22 :)
I guess some folks can do that map in about 4-5 minutes, and i didnt even find 1 hard jump (but falling off the rails really sux).

secondly....  DT, he might have a problem which i had (and still have) on one (and only one!) of my maps:  that map seems to be really bright, and the textures brightened up, just as on mine.  What is up with that? There is an error occuring each time I want to compile my map, saving something with MAX-Lighting, no clue what that is, but its definitely weird.  And, of course, after having that error, he wont finish compiling, leaving the entities alone, so none of those things work. Could you please give help on that?

thx
